What are the Benefits?

Fellows are grantees of the English Language Fellow Program. They are neither employees of the U.S. Department of State nor are they employees of Georgetown University.

All Fellows receive the following benefits:

  • Stipend - A generous stipend deposited directly to the Fellow’s U.S. checking account. For the academic year 2008-2009, Fellows receive $25,000; Senior Fellows receive $35,000.
  • Living Allowance - The Living Allowance, which varies from country to country, is designed to cover the cost of reasonable, safe, and comfortable housing (comparable to the standard of living in the country of assignment), food, utilities, and local transportation to and from work for one person.
  • Transportation - Fellows also receive international round trip transportation from the Fellow’s residence to the host country.
  • Health Benefit Plan – Fellows receive supplemental medical/hospitalization health care coverage up to $50,000 per illness/injury while abroad (not to replace any health insurance held by the Fellow).
  • Educational Materials Allowance – The Educational Materials Allowance is for the purchase of materials specifically related to EL Fellow projects.  All purchased materials must be left with PAS, host institution(s), American Corner, libraries, or other resource center(s) upon completion of the Fellowship.  All Fellows must report the purchase of materials made with this allowance (including original receipts) in their Mid-Year and Final Reports. Any unused Educational Materials Allowance funds must be returned to the Program in form of a check payable to Georgetown University. For the academic year 2008-2009, Fellows receive $500 and Senior Fellows receive $1,000.
  • Shipping Allowance - Fellows receive a $600 Shipping Allowance to cover shipping costs to and from assignment (this includes paying for baggage carts, any overweight accompanying luggage, and the costs of shipping any unaccompanied belongings from and back to the United States.
  • Pre-Departure Allowance – Fellows receive $700 Pre-Departure Allowance to cover pre-departure costs including visas, medical examinations, malaria prophylaxis (if necessary), and other expenses incurred prior to departure, including transportation to the airport.
  • Dependent’s Allowance (Senior Fellows only) – Senior Fellows are eligible to receive a $5,000 Dependent’s Allowance designed to assist with the expenses of accompanying dependent(s).  A dependent is defined as a spouse or a relative (child, grandchild, parent, or sibling) who is financially dependent on the Senior Fellow.  To receive the full amount of the Dependent’s Allowance, accompanying dependent(s) must live with the Senior Fellow for at least 80% of the fellowship period.

A Fellow’s spouse and/or dependent(s) may accompany a Fellow for all or part of the fellowship period. Keep in mind that the Living Allowance (which varies from country to country) is designed to cover the cost of reasonable, safe, and comfortable housing, food, utilities, and transportation to and from work for one person.

A spouse and/or dependent(s) are the sole responsibility of the Fellow. The EL Fellow Program does not offer any employment opportunities or logistical support for spouses or dependents. Senior Fellows may request a dependent's allowance for financial support for spouses or dependents.
