AY 2007-2008 Projects - Near East and North Africa

Country                       Israel
City                              Tel Aviv
Host Institution           AMAL Network

Project Description

AMAL network has been working in the Bedouin Sector for years. In 2005 with the help and support of the American Embassy a new project was launched in the high schools - ACCESS - which enables weak 3 pointers to pass the 4 point Matriculation exam in English, thus opening the gates for an academic education. ACCESS has been successful despite some difficulties.  English is taught in the Bedouin Sector as a third language, since the students learn Arabic and Hebrew before they start learning English.  Teachers are qualified for the job, but often lack the necessary fluency in English. As a result, the language of instruction is often Arabic rather than English. Therefore, it would be very helpful if an American teacher could teach at the Bedouin schools. In addition, the EL Fellow will provide Bedouin students and teachers with the communication and teaching skills needed to participate in the global economy, to improve their access to diverse perspectives on a broad variety of issues, and to give them information that will better enable them to understand and convey concepts about American values, democratic representative government, free enterprise, and the rule of law.
