Country Algeria City Algiers
Host Institution University of Algiers
Project Description An EL Fellow is requested to teach in the English Language Department at the University of Algiers. The University seeks someone qualified to teach undergraduate students American Studies, English composition, and speaking skills. The University of Algiers is located in the capitol city. The EL Fellow will teach at three campuses, including the campus for Languages, the Campus for Islamic Studies, and the campus for Translation.
Project Objectives English teaching is a growth industry in Algeria across all ages, social, and employment sectors. Algerian President Bouteflika has made the teaching of English a major priority of his administration. This is reflected in a Presidential initiative that calls for English to be taught one grade lower each academic year until the teaching of English begins concurrently with the teaching of French in the first grade of primary education. It is also reflected in the increasing number of Algerians who need English to pursue academic goals or conduct business. An EL Fellow teaching at the University of Algiers greatly advances the teaching of English in Algeria by improving English-language instruction for undergraduate students studying at that major university.
About the Host Institution The University of Algiers is the preeminent institution of higher learning in Algeria and is divided into several campuses located throughout the capitol. The EL Fellow will teach at the main campus, the campus for Islamic Studies, and the campus for Arts and Literature.
