Project Description The EL Fellow is invited to the Luhansk National Pedagogical University to teach English Language Development course to 3rd, 4th and 5th year students and English language methodology course for 3rd year students of the English Language and Methodology Department. The third option will be teaching the American Studies course to 2nd year students. The EL Fellow will also be requested to work informally with students at the English language discussion club and give seminars on American culture and language for teachers of the Foreign Languages Department. These activities will enhance cultural awareness of both teachers and students. English language methodology course is a conversational English course based on four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and includes such topics of the university’s standard curriculum as Human Life, Education, Traveling, Geography, Arts and Culture. The EL Fellow will be requested to introduce current methods and materials in the English language teaching in order to upgrade the existing course and raise the level of communicative teaching while introducing student-centered teaching approaches as opposed to a teacher-centered one. The EL Fellow will also provide an American Studies course. The aim of the course is to introduce students to American history, life and culture and to stimulate students’ critical thinking skills while teaching about the development of civil society and democratic institutions.
Project Objectives Luhansk National Pedagogical University is a very important site in Eastern Ukraine. EL Fellows have never been placed in this institution before. The need for innovative methodologies, which encourage cooperative learning and critical thinking skills, remains great in this region. Introducing the American component to the university program and providing the teacher training workshops would improve the quality of teaching and provide teachers with opportunities for their professional development. The presence of the Regional English Teaching Center at this institution will be an ideal place for EL Fellow’s outreach to teachers from schools and institutions in Luhansk as well as from the region. This would help teachers to introduce new methodology approaches and teaching techniques to their English language programs and would improve their professional skills.
