AY 2007-2008 Projects - Europe/ Eurasia

Country                       Turkey
City                              Gaziantep
Host Institution           Gaziantep University

Project Description
At Gaziantep University, the Fellow EL will work in the English Language and Literature Department. The EL Fellow will teach no more than three preps per semester (4 different courses) to total no more than 20 contact hours per week for the duration of the 10-month grant. The department seeks assistance with American Literature, Short Story and Readings in American Literature. Having an experienced American in those areas of expertise will greatly boost their program. The EL Fellow is encouraged to reach out with programming at the American Corner based in Gaziantep and offer teacher training workshops at other educational institutions in the area.

Project Objectives
Gazianetep is located in south east Turkey in a conservative area. Having an EL Fellow there for 2007-2008 will continue successful exposure to American culture in the somewhat remote area through daily teaching and also extra curricular activities such as conversation or film clubs.

About the Host Institution
Gaziantep University is located in one of the first settlements in Anatolia. Gaziantep gained the status of an independent state university in 1987. Gaziantep is the biggest city in southeast of Turkey and the sixth biggest in Turkey. The conservative leanings of the area add to the necessity of having an EL Fellow with whom students and faculty can interact and share ideas not only on the latest ELT and literature trends, but also American culture.
