AY 2007-2008 Projects - Europe/ Eurasia

Country                       Turkey
City                              Ankara
Host Institution           National Coordinator/ English Access Microscholarship program

Project Description
As National Coordinator, the EL Fellow will be responsible for supporting the other EL Fellows (up to nine) in the field with their projects (teaching ideas, techniques, material recommendations, website suggestions and ideas/materials for teacher training). The Coordinator will maintain weekly contact with the EL Fellows through phone calls, emails, and the yahoo listserv. The Coordinator will also engage in site visits. During the site visits, the Coordinator will observe university classes and provide feedback to the EL Fellows, meet with heads and staff members of the English/ELT departments to ensure that EL Fellow receive adequate logistical and other support from their universities. During these visits, the Coordinator may also be asked to conduct seminars for teachers at the EL Fellow host institutions, providing them with the latest information on a variety of programs that are supported by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Coordinator will be responsible for collecting, editing, and forwarding the weekly highlights of EL Fellow activities to the English Language Officer (ELO) at the US Embassy. The Coordinator will also help the ELO organize ELT workshops and mini-conferences throughout Turkey in which various EL Fellows will be invited to participate. This model was established for the academic year 2006-2007 with mini-conferences being organized at various universities and educational institutions. The model allows educational institutions to hold an ELT conference with very little planning, very little output from their university, but relatively big impact for both instructors at the educational institution and ELT students studying there. While the Coordinator will not have a host institution per se, s/he will give frequent support to both the Turkish American Association in Ankara and the English Access Microscholarship Program. The Coordinator will be an invaluable asset to the Access Coordinator by assisting with ensuring the Access programs are consistent across the country, consulting on the Access curricula and suggesting activities for the Access teachers as needed. The Coordinator will also help organize ELT workshops with the non-governmental organization TEGV (Turkish Educational Volunteer Foundation www.tegv.org) which has facilities throughout Turkey and provides after school programs to underprivileged school-age children be they Turkish or refugees.

Project Objectives
The EL Fellow Coordinator will be a traveling trouble shooter for the EL Fellow Program and will help the post maintain a national presence at the universities throughout Turkey. Having an EL Fellow Coordinator who will also provide support to the English Access Microscholarship Program at the Turkish American Association will be an ideal combination for collaboration in ELT and outreach to the community.
