Project Description
Siberia is a vast region with many remote locations that need current information about methods of teaching English as a foreign language and American studies content, to enable the business community and youth to upgrade English language skills. From this hub of Siberia, the EL Fellow will travel extensively throughout a vast area that is home to over 110 higher education institutions (there are 40 universities in Novosibirsk alone). The EL Fellow will also work in Akademgorodok, which is a sputnik city of Novosibirsk and is a pilot site for silicon valley-style technology and research centers. Assignment of an EL Fellow to the Novosibirsk Technical University and the Ministry of Education training center will assist in the professional development of hundreds of teachers in this large region, including outreach to teachers from remote areas who have limited access to accurate and up-to-date information about American life and institutions. It will also provide post with an excellent opportunity for development of relations with leading educational establishments in the region and the Ministry of Education. The EL Fellow will also support the American centers and corners in this vast region, as well as be a link between post and the Russian educational community. The EL Fellow will support activities of NOVELTA, an EFL Teachers’ Association of Novosibirsk. The EL Fellow will conduct outreach training programs in coordination with Ministry of Education retraining centers in various locations throughout the region, including Tomsk, Omsk, Barnaul, Bijsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kyzyl, Abakan, Gorno-Altaisk, and participate in post-funded Summer Institute of English TEFL Training and American Studies Institutes and English Language Summer Camps. The EL Fellow will also conduct TEFL consultations at the Novosibirsk Technical University, Novosibirsk State University, Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Novosibirsk Railroad Academy, In-Service Teachers’ Training Institute, will make presentations at American Corner, and will work for NOVELTA. The EL Fellow will have 2 outreach trips every month, in-country program allowance funds permitting.
Project Objectives
To support the teaching of English for professional purposes in various sectors of the community, as well as enhance curriculum and instruction at the secondary and tertiary level.
About the Host Institution
The Novosibirsk State Technical University is one of the leading Universities of Siberia, advanced and rapidly growing. The University trains not only specialists in Science, Math, Technology, Business and Management , but also provides quality training in the Humanities. The EL Fellow will work with the EFL faculty of all Departments.
NOVELTA is one of the best EFL Teachers Associations of Siberia, it unites teachers of secondary schools and Universities, as well as a few NGOs. NOVELTA organizes traditional Winter Methodology Schools for teachers, Talent Shows for school children and various contests for students and pupils. The EL Fellow will work with the Association conducting seminars for teachers, participating in various NOVELTA events.
