Project Description
Ufa is home to a significant Muslim population and a partner in ECA’s English ACCESS Microscholarship Program in FY05 and FY06 and post's partner in the highly successful FY04 and FY05 summer camps for secondary school youth from low-income families. The primary institution will be the American Bashkir Intercollege, where the EL Fellow will work in the English department by providing lectures, seminars and workshops that reflect current trends in EL teaching and American studies to ELT professionals in Ufa. In addition, the EL Fellow will serve as a resource for American studies issues by being a regular presenter at the English language club and an occasional speaker to English language students specializing in various fields of study. The EL Fellow will play a key role in supporting the DOS-funded English ACCESS Microscholarship Program currently underway (to continue through FY06), as well as summer camps of English and American studies for youth in the region. The Bashkir State Pedagogical University will be a secondary site where the EL Fellow will teach ELT methodology to pre-service EL teachers and design materials in this area. The EL Fellow will work closely with the chair of the methodology department on related projects, which may include student-teacher observations. The EL Fellow will regularly conduct seminars and workshops for EFL teachers of the republic of Bashkortostan at the Ministry of Education Bashkir Institute for Teacher Development (BIRO) and at other local teacher training institutes. The EL Fellow will conduct outreach training programs in coordination with Ministry of Education retraining centers in various locations throughout the region, including Sterlitamak, Orenburg, Cheboksary, Krasnaya Gorka, Belebey, Magnitogorsk, Kurgan, Chelyabinsk and participate in post-funded “Summer Institute of English TEFL Training and American Studies Institutes” and “English Language Summer Camps”. Secondary Projects will include E-Teacher project. The EL Fellow will be involved in improvement of curriculum for English ACCESS Microscholarship Program, will teach at the American Bashkir Intercollege, will work at The Bashkir State Pedagogical University and at Bashkir Institute for Teacher Development (BIRO). The EL Fellow will have two outreach trips every month, in-country allowance funds permitting.
Project Objectives
To support the teaching of English for professional purposes in various sectors of the community, as well as enhance curriculum and instruction at the secondary and tertiary level.
About the Host Institution
The American Bashkir Intercollege is a very successful and rapidly growing NGO that was set up by USG-programs alumni. It has a great impact on ELT teaching in Bashkortostan. The American Bashkir Intercollege has been a reliable partner in Access Microscholarship project and in Summer Language Camps projects.
The Bashkir State Pedagogical University trains teachers for Ufa and Bashkortostan as well as for the Southern Urals area. The EL Fellow will work with the faculty of the Foreign Languages Department and will also make presentations at the conferences for EFL teachers from rural areas.
