AY 2007-2008 Projects - Europe/ Eurasia

Country                       Moldova
City                              Chisinau
Host Institution           Ion Creanga Pedagogical State University/English Teaching Resource Center

Project Description
The EL Fellow's main host institution will be Ion Creanga Pedagogical State University in Chisinau, Moldova's primary teacher training university. The EL Fellow will conduct classroom teaching for third, fourth and fifth year students. Classes will focus on the areas of speaking, reading, American literature, and other areas as requested. The EL Fellow will also give weekly workshops at the English Teaching Resource Center (ETRC), located within the University. The ETRC, opened in 2003 as a collaborative project between the University and U.S. Embassy Chisinau, is supported by PAS grants. These workshops will be designed for university and school instructors. Aside from these two main teaching responsibilities, the EL Fellow may be asked, from time to time, to participate in additional activities. These will include giving presentations and workshops at Moldova's American Corners and working with the Association of English Teachers (APLE). If security conditions permit, the EL Fellow may be asked to travel to Transnistria with PAS to give occasional classes or workshops at Transnistrian State University. This could be a challenging opportunity for the EL Fellow.

Project Objectives
As Moldova now stands on the frontier of the European Union, the development of English Language Teaching (ELT) is of primary importance in the country's integration into the wider community. PAS Chisinau has for the past several years been very committed to upgrading ELT in Moldova, supporting such projects as English Teaching Centers, English Language Fellows, APLE and its activities, and curriculum revision. A presence of an EL Fellow would enable the post to continue with these initiatives, all of which are already yielding fruit. The primary objective of this project is the enhancement of ELT at Ion Creanga Pedagogical University, which prepares the majority of Moldova's future English teachers. The EL Fellow will be interacting on a daily basis with these teachers, helping them both to improve their fluency in English and their knowledge of ELT methodology. As the ETRC is located within the University, the EL Fellow will easily be able to give weekly workshops there, thus ensuring that the Center continues to be able to offer quality in-service training for university professors and elementary and high school teachers. The Center's extensive collection of ELT materials will provide a resource for the EL Fellow to draw on in planning classes there. Transnistria, the breakaway region in the eastern part of Moldova, remains an isolated area from the rest of the country. The Embassy is currently looking at ways to engage the population in Transnistria, and education is one of the ways that is being seriously considered. The EL Fellow will be a valuable resource in terms of offering occasional classes at the university in methodology, literature, etc.
