Country                       Brazil
City                              Sao Paulo
Host Institution           Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas

Note: This project starts in February 2008

Project Description
The application of PUC-Campinas for continued participation in the EL Fellow Program is part of the Internationalization Project of the University. Some of the main structural actions are the development of skills in foreign languages and competence in dealing with different cultures. The enlisted activities shall be developed and implemented by the requested EL Fellow in PUC-Campinas. Beyond language courses and teacher training, the EL Fellow will support the development of seminars and cultural events and be a reference for institutional connection (i.e. PUC-Campinas and his/her original University). It is likely that the EL Fellow will also take part in the design of projects of PUC-Campinas with the US Consulate in São Paulo and the US Embassy in Brasilia (teleconferences, seminars), aiming to broaden the presence of English Language and American Culture in PUC- Campinas and establishing linkages with US institutions. School of Letters and the Department of International and Foreign Affairs have been designated to help the EL Fellow get all the necessary tools. The School of Letters is responsible for graduate and undergraduate programs in Portuguese, English and Spanish in the various knowledge areas in which PUC-Campinas offers its educational services. Therefore, it is responsible for teacher licensing in languages. The Department of International and Foreign Affairs is responsible for the development and the improvement of the University’s Internationalization Project. The EF Program meets the University’s commitment to contribute to EFL Teacher Training and English Language/Culture Learning processes, enhancing their quality in order to respond to the needs and interests derived from the important role Campinas has in the region of the São Paulo State, and even in Brazil.

Project Objectives
The expectation of PUC-Campinas is to continue the great program started and developed by the current EL Fellow with the following types of projects: English language courses for undergraduate and graduate students in teacher training programs; English language courses for specific purposes at graduate and undergraduate levels based on the needs of the students (the first preference is business or economics, the second preference journalism, and the third science and technology); American Culture and History Courses for university students and the general public; organization of events, cultural activities and developing materials for a variety of academic purposes; contribution to the improvement and increase of the international cooperation with US universities, working with the DRE; serve as an educational advisor for students and faculties in the areas of academic opportunities in the US; and assist as an educational advisor in curricula development. The activities listed here will be enriched with the EL Fellow’s suggestions and adapted to the EL Fellow’s academic profile.  The El Fellow will also participate in course offerings such as English Comprehension and Composition as a Teaching Assistant. The EL Fellow will lead practical seminars and break-out sessions.
