AY 2007-2008 Projects - Africa

Country                       Togo
City                              Lome
Host Institution           Ecole Nationale d'Adminstration/University of Lome

Project Description
Upgrading the level of English teaching in Togolese system of education is one of post's priority goals. The presence of the EL Fellow will help post to meet the growing request for English language among Togolese youth and future leaders. The Ecole Nationale d'Administration has a total population of 250 students who are civil servants including magistrates, customs officers, tax and levy inspectors, all of whom have a guarantee of employment after graduation, and will become future decision-makers of Togo and several other countries in the region - including Chad and Niger. The University of Lome has a student body of 20,000. The American Corner, which will open in February 2007, will serve as a focal point for extracurricular activities for students and faculty members interested in learning more about U.S. society and culture. Due to more restricted public access at the New Embassy Compound, the American Corner will become an important programming platform for post. The EL Fellow will be responsible for teaching English language at the National School of Administration (ENA) and planning and coordinating English language activities at the American Corner at the University of Lome (for example American film series, English Club conversation groups, internet training for English language teachers). Courses at ENA will focus on strengthening English language skills, with emphasis on reading, speaking and writing. The EL Fellow will also be responsible for working with the other faculty members to develop appropriate teaching materials, assignments and exams. The EL Fellow is encouraged to use U.S. society and culture as a tool to teach language. The EL Fellow will be expected to teach 8 hours per week at ENA and conduct 8 hours per week of activities at the American Corner at the University.
