AY 2007-2008 Projects - Africa

Country                       Rwanda
City                              Kigali
Host Institution           Kigali Health Institute

Note: This project starts in February 2008

Project Description

The Kigali Health Institute (KHI) requests an EL Fellow to teach intensive English courses to first year students whose medium of instruction at secondary school was French (approximately 80 percent of the student body). The EL Fellow will also assist in the development of a health communication skills curriculum for KHI students. This curriculum will supplement the intensive English program and is intended for second and third year students. The EL Fellow will also assist in the development of English language courses for KHI academic and administrative staff. For the academics, English language skills are needed since Anglophone students often request that lecturers, who primarily use French as a medium of instruction, be able to provide explanations in English. The administrative staff also needs a good grasp of English to interact with English speaking staff members and students. Through workshops and seminars, the EL Fellow will guide faculty at KHI's language department in the development of English for Special Purposes curricula, appropriate teaching materials, and effective teaching techniques.
