Country Mozambique City Inhambane
Host Institution Eduardo Mondlane University
Note: This project starts in February 2008 Project Description The EL Fellow will work at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM)'s Tourism School located in the central Mozambican city of Inhambane. The school is Mozambique's primary institution for Tourism and Hotel Administration. The EL Fellow will teach English, conduct teacher training for English professors, refine the program curricula, and assist in producing an English teaching manual for use in the classroom.
Project Objectives The project objectives center around improving the quality of English language instruction at the university through teaching both students and teachers and developing curricula and materials. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, and Mozambique's forefront industry for developing economically is tourism, which is on the rise. Mozambique has 1,500 miles of coastline that it would like to take advantage of to draw tourists in, but it relies heavily on South Africans and other nearby Anglophone neighbors. A key part of the goal to boost the tourism industry is developing capacity in the English language. Inhambane is located six hours north of the capital city on the coast in the heart of what is becoming a destination for foreign tourists. English materials and opportunities for language instruction are largely nonexistent in the province, yet there is a strong desire at the school and in the community to improve English skills. Inhambane hosts a stable but significant Muslim population. The EL Fellow will provide occasional assistance to the Inhambane campus of Mussa Bin Bique University (UMBB), which current hosts an EL Fellow in Nampula, as well as provide workshops to instructors in other universities up-country in Beira, Mozambique's second largest city.
About the Host Institution Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Inhambane opened in 2003 and is a branch of UEM in Maputo, which is recognized as the top university in the country. The campus currently has over 250 students, but this number is steadily increasing. UEM Inhambane offers four-year degrees in Tourism and Hotel Management. Students are required to take four hours of English instruction per week during each year of the program. The university seeks assistance in refining the English curricula, developing course materials, and teacher training, in addition to classroom instruction.
