Country                       India
City                             Calcutta
Host Institution          Netaji Subhas Open University

Program Description
The placement of the EL Fellow at the Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) will be the first significant step in establishing an American English program in the Marxist state of West Bengal.  The term Open University refers to an educational institution that is open to all categories of students including adult learners, distance education students, part-time students, and regular students. The University has been very effective in promoting education among the rural, working class and underprivileged sectors of the country.  The EL Fellow Program would serve the twin objectives of strengthening institutional capacity for English teacher training in India and would also be an important initiative to engage and impact a cross-section of important contacts. The EL Fellow will disseminate information on American government & politics, education, economics, literature, society and issues of global concern. The Fellow will combine teaching English with programs such as book discussions, Digital Video Conferencing, workshops, and seminars.
