Country                       India
City                             New Delhi
Host Institution          Indira Gandhi National Open University

Project Description
IGNOU is a major distance learning institution that also offers professional in-service development for instructors. Through the various systems IGNOU uses (Internet, Webcam, Videoconference, and Satellite Broadcast covering a large part of SA) training for English teachers in India can be conducted on a vast scale. The EL Fellow position will help break new ground in teacher education by designing and delivering the first English teacher training courses using IGNOU distance learning technology. Approximately half the Fellow’s time will be allocated to providing training and support to posts in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal, where massive English teacher education and curriculum development are needed. Because the reach of IGNOU satellite and Internet courses extends to the surrounding countries, there is a mutual benefit in having a regional Fellow placed at IGNOU. While traveling to constituent posts to carry out PA-determined projects, the Fellow can dovetail face-to-face interaction with audiences for IGNOU English teacher training courses.
