AY 2006-2007 Projects - Europe and Eurasia

Country                       Turkey
City                             Istanbul
Host Institution          Istanbul Technical University

Project Description
The EL Fellow will be based in the School of Foreign Languages of Istanbul Technical University and working on program evaluation of the effectiveness of materials developed, the testing system and the reviewing of the curriculum to adapt it from a grammar-based curriculum to a more skills-based curriculum. The Fellow will also help with designing pre- and in-service orientation programs at ITU introducing such topics as peer observations and mentoring. The focus of the Fellow's work will be on how to best engage the teachers and expose them to current trends and best practices to improve their department rather than on classroom teaching. The Fellow will teach no more than 4 preps per semester (4 different courses) to total no more than 20 contact hours/week. Additional responsibilities may include facilitating teacher training seminars for in-service teachers in the department on teaching academic writing, how to present grammar, note-taking for students, material development, academic reading, and techniques in teaching vocabulary. While the Fellow will not be teaching in the ACCESS program, s/he will consult with, and support the teacher of the ACCESS micro-scholarship program in the area. The ACCESS program is one in which non-elite secondary school students are provided free English language lessons outside their regularly scheduled school timetable. One of the program's goals is to expose students to American style education and culture.
