Project Description
The EL Fellow will conduct teacher training activities and work with the Ministry of Education, Syunik branch, on preparing a strategic plan of improving teaching of English in the remote regions of Armenia. The Fellow will conduct training programs for English teachers of Syunik Region through the Syunik Branch of the National Education Institute (NEI) of the RA Ministry of Education and Science; expose teachers to modern English teaching methodology to substitute the traditional grammar-centered and translation-centered methods; improve teaching of English in remote areas of Armenia through availing new information resources to the target audience; observe classes at secondary schools and university and identify the needs areas; and work with the NEI staff to find solutions to the identified problems and develop a strategic plan of overcoming them.  The Fellow will prepare a variety of training workshops, seminars and long-term programs for in-service and pre-service teachers in Methods of Teaching Speaking English; Academic Writing; Methods of Teaching Comprehension; and Methods of Teaching Reading. The Fellow will assess the current English curriculum, identify needs areas and in cooperation with the NEI staff develop possible solutions within the framework of the current requirements set by the Ministry of Education. The Fellow will arrange a first conference for English teachers of the region to allow them to present and to interact with each other with a hope of creating a working network. The schedule will include regular one to two week (or longer) workshops/seminars and a conference at the NEI and some other sites in the region (around 60%), visit to schools in the region, class observations and informal discussions with teachers (around 10%), discussion of the current English curriculum for secondary school (around 15%), needs assessment and drafting of possible solutions (around 15%).
