AY 2006-2007 Projects - East Asia and Pacific

Philippines, Philippine Department of Education

Country                      Philippines
City                             Manila
Host Institution          Philippine Department of Education

Project Description
The EL Fellow will support Embassy Manila's major initiative to expand access to and improve the quality of education in the conflict-affected areas of Muslim Mindanao. The Fellow will work with the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) in coordinating teacher training programs and curriculum development, with a strong emphasis on Mindanao. The projects in question include: the National English Proficiency Program, which involves both teacher training and curriculum development, with primary focus on Mindanao; a program that seeks to introduce/improve English language instruction in the "madaris," the private Muslim schools that play an important role in education in Muslim Mindanao. In connection with these projects, and working with the training departments of the elementary and secondary divisions of DepEd, the EL Fellow will provide professional guidance for developing coordinated "train the trainer" programs, assist in developing training materials utilizing ECA/A/L print and electronic resources, and cooperate with professional organizations, such as the Linguistic Society of the Philippines, the Philippine Association for Language Teaching, and Reading Association of the Philippines.
