| Country Malawi City Blantyre Host Institution University of Malawi Polytechnic Project Description The goal of the English Language Fellow Program in Malawi is to develop an advanced writing curriculum focusing journalism students, undergraduates and practicing journalists. The EL Fellow will be based at the University of Malawi, Polytechnic ("the Polytechnic), in the Journalism and Language departments, and would teach workshops for practicing journalists, journalism students and faculty. Programs developed with University staff will improve the quality of writing in Polytechnic’s Journalism and undergraduate programs, and among Malawian journalists. The Fellow will work with staff at Polytechnic and the neighboring Malawi Institute of Journalism to design writing modules that can begin to address these problems. Specifically, the Fellow will be responsible for: developing curriculum for advanced composition courses, focusing on journalism students; teaching advanced composition courses for journalism students at Polytechnic and Malawi Institute of Journalism; conducting train the trainer workshops for lecturers at the Polytechnic, Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ), and, time permitting, at Chancellor College in Zomba, and the University of Mzuzu; and developing and conducting intensive writing workshops for practicing journalists. The Polytechnic expects the Fellow to be an active member of the Faculty of Journalism. The Fellow will arrive in September of 2006, near the end of the '06 academic year in Southern Africa. The Fellow will initially work with other faculty to examine the composition program in the School of Journalism and the Language Department and will hold advanced training seminars for faculty for improving English composition in the Malawian context. The Fellow will work no more than forty hours per week and his/her duties will not include supervisory or administrative duties. With the start of the 2007 academic year in February/March, the Fellow will assist in teaching composition courses developed in the first semester at Polytechnic and MIJ. |
