AY 2006-2007 Projects - Africa

Country                      Congo
City                            Lubumbashi
Host Institution         University of Lubumbashi

Project Description
The University of Lubumbashi has an English Department, but has had limited contact with native speaking teachers and teacher trainers. While the Congolese American Language Institute attached to the Embassy tries to conduct periodic training in Lubumbashi, physical distance makes such training infrequent. An EL Fellow will reinvigorate ESL teaching at that institution.  The Fellow’s presence at the University will not only assist in the development and improvement of ESL programs but it will also enable the mission to establish a key presence at the American Corner scheduled to open in early 2006.  The Fellow will carry out the following: teach ESL classes 20 hours per week, both undergraduate and graduate courses; conduct regular teacher training sessions, both at the University of Lubumbashi and at the Institut Superieur Pedagogique; conduct programs in English at the American Corner in Lubumbashi; assist with curriculum development for English for special purposes courses, such as communications skills for engineers, accountants, etc.; and conduct TOEFL preparation assistance for potential Fulbright and Humphrey candidates.
