Contact EL Fellow Program

The English Language (EL) Fellow Program promotes English language learning around the world and fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. It places talented, highly qualified U.S. educators with Master’s degrees with a focus in TEFL/TESL or Applied Linguistics in all regions of the world.

The EL Fellow Program promotes English language learning and enhances English teaching capacity abroad. Through U.S. embassy projects, Fellows share their expertise, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn other cultures. Upon returning to the United States, they share their experiences and acquired knowledge with their communities and professional colleagues.

The EL Fellow Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Office of English Language Programs, and is administered by the Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) at Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

Today, the EL Fellow Program is more vital than ever. As a premier, competitive opportunity to work on TESL/TEFL projects in developing countries, the EL Fellow Program received over 350 applications for 90 available projects in the AY 2009-2010 cycle. We are currently accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year (although most projects are September 2010 through June 2011, some will begin in early 2011 to end in December 2011).

Candidate Selection Timeline
Interviews (January – June)
Interviews are conducted on a rolling basis as applications are submitted. Only applicants meeting the minimum eligibility requirements will be interviewed.

Pairing applicants to projects (March –June)
The deadline for priority consideration for the AY 2010-2011 is March 1, 2010.  Only interviewed applicants with complete portfolios, including letters of recommendation, will be considered for a Fellowship. Former Fellows must have a positive letter of recommendation from either PAS or RELO during his/her Fellowhip.

Top candidates will be matched to projects based on their skills and experience. Georgetown will send a roster of candidates matching a particular project for final selection by the respective U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Candidates may be considered for multiple projects; however, candidates are only placed on one roster at a time. Having the minimum eligibility requirements will not guarantee placement on a roster.

Selection of Fellows
(April – June)
Beginning in April, Georgetown notifies finalist candidates matched to specific U.S. Embassy-sponsored EL Fellow project rosters. Candidates wishing to be placed on the roster must be willing to accept an offer if the post (U.S. Embassy or Consulate) selects them as their first choice for the position.  Candidates may decline the offer if selected. If the candidate declines the offer, he or she may be placed on another roster depending on remaining available projects, taking into account the candidate’s skills and experience. Selection for one project does not guarantee selection for other projects.

Posts determine which candidate is the best fit from the roster.  Once Georgetown receives the selection, we notify the selected Fellow, at which point the candidate has two business days to accept or decline.

The selection process continues until all projects are filled. The majority of selections are made between April and mid-June, though some candidates are selected in the summer, particularly for those projects starting in the 2011 spring semester.
